THE HONEST POSITION
Scrap value is simple maths. Here's the honest version.
A scrap car is worth its weight in steel, plus a handful of valuable parts. Steel prices move month to month, but a typical car holds roughly a tonne to a tonne and a half of recyclable metal, and at recent Australian prices that puts most scrap cars between a few hundred dollars and about a thousand. Bigger utes and 4WDs weigh more, so they pay more. Anyone quoting one fixed price for every car isn't quoting scrap value; they're quoting their margin.
The part sellers miss is the catalytic converter. The cat under your car contains platinum, palladium and rhodium, and depending on the car it can add fifty to a few hundred dollars on its own. Hybrid cats can be worth more again. We price the cat separately and openly, because it's your car's money, not ours.
And one honest caveat: a fair share of the “scrap” cars we're shown aren't scrap at all. Broken, yes. End-of-life, no. Because our workshop repairs cars at trade cost, we check repair value before we quote metal value. Get a scrap quote with the repair check included. - Scrap value is weight times the steel price, plus the catalytic converter and reusable parts. Quotes that ignore the cat are short-changing you.
- Depollution is law, not a favour: fuel, oil, coolant and refrigerant recovered, batteries and tyres recycled, before any car is crushed.
- Plates on? The Notice of Disposal makes it official, and we lodge it with you at pickup. No plates? Cancel the rego and check if you're owed a refund.

As a rule of thumb, a few hundred dollars for a small car up to around a thousand or more for heavy utes and 4WDs, moving with the steel market. The catalytic converter can add fifty to a few hundred on top. An exact number needs the car's weight and this month's steel price, which is what a real quote gives you.
