The honest comparison · Sydney
Us vs wreckers vs private sale vs dealers
Short answer: for anything damaged, dead, unregistered or old, a salvage buyer with its own workshop beats wreckers on price and beats private sale on speed and certainty. For a clean late-model car, private sale usually wins, and we'll tell you that to your face. Here's the whole picture, column by column.
| Salvage Experts | Wreckers | Private sale | Dealers | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typical price for a damaged car | Repair value: what it's worth fixed, not weighed | Scrap weight: usually a few hundred dollars | Higher, if a buyer will take the damage | Trade-in lowball, or flat refusal |
| Time to sold | 24 to 48 hours, same-day available | Fast too, but at scrap prices | 1 to 4+ weeks of messages and test drives | Fast only if you're buying their car |
| Free towing / pickup | Free anywhere in Sydney, always | Often free, sometimes clawed back in the price | The car must get to the buyer somehow | You drive it in |
| Paperwork handled | Notice of Disposal lodged with you at pickup | Varies wildly by operator | All on you | Yes, if they'll take the car |
| Buys unregistered / no pink slip | As it sits, plates on or off | Usually yes | Most buyers walk away | Almost never |
| Risk of kerbside renegotiation | None: price quoted is price paid, in writing | The industry's favourite trick | Haggling is the whole game | Subject to inspection games |
The questions behind the table
Is it better to sell my car to a wrecker or a salvage buyer?+
A salvage buyer with its own workshop, like us, almost always pays more. Wreckers price your car by its weight in scrap metal, usually a few hundred dollars. We price what the car is worth repaired or dismantled, because we do that work in-house. Same speed, same free tow, better number.
Is selling privately worth the extra money?+
Sometimes, if the car is running, registered and under about ten years old, and you have two to four weeks for messages, test drives and haggling. For damaged, unregistered or older cars, private buyers mostly disappear, and the extra you hoped for never arrives. Our quote is free, so compare it against what the market actually offers you.
When should I NOT sell to you?+
Two honest cases. If your car is late-model, low-kilometre and running well, a private sale usually beats every trade buyer, us included. And if you only want loose parts sold, we buy whole cars only. For everything else, especially anything damaged, dead or unregistered, get our number first.
