Cancel Rego and Claim Your Refund in NSW: Money Most Sellers Leave Behind
Short answer: if your car had registration left when you sold it, you can cancel the rego and get a pro-rata refund of the unused months, and your CTP green slip may refund separately. It takes one visit or one form, and sellers leave this money behind all the time.
When a refund is on the table
Two situations. First: you sold the car and it will be re-registered by the buyer. Then you don't cancel anything; the rego transfers with the car, and there's no refund to chase. Second: the car is off the road for good, written off, scrapped, or sold to a buyer like us who won't re-register it. Now the remaining registration is refundable, and it's yours to claim.
The refund is roughly pro-rata: full unused months of registration, minus a small administration fee. A car with nine months of rego left is holding real money.
Months of unused rego are refundable. Most sellers never claim them.
How to cancel and claim, step by step
Take the plates off the car before it leaves (or at pickup; our drivers help with this every week). Then visit a Service NSW centre with the plates, your ID, and proof the car was sold or written off. The disposal paperwork we lodge with you covers that. Ask to cancel the registration and claim the refund in the same visit.
The CTP green slip is separate: it comes from the insurer, not Service NSW. Once the rego is cancelled, contact your CTP insurer with the cancellation confirmation and ask for the pro-rata CTP refund. Two refunds, one afternoon.
What if the rego already expired?
If the registration lapsed before the sale, there's nothing to refund, and nothing to cancel. The car sells as unregistered, which changes nothing about selling to us: we buy unregistered cars as they sit, and the pickup is still free.
One trap: an unregistered car still needs its plates dealt with if you kept them. Plates from a cancelled registration go back to Service NSW. Chucking them in a drawer is fine legally but returning them closes the loop cleanly.
Rego refund questions, straight answers
How much rego refund will I get in NSW?
Roughly the cost of the full unused months remaining, minus a small administration fee. If your rego cost $800 for the year and six months are left, expect a bit under $400. The exact figure is calculated when you cancel at Service NSW.
Do I get a refund if I sell the car registered?
No, and you don't want one. When a registered car sells, the remaining rego transfers to the buyer and adds value to the sale. Refunds only apply when the registration is cancelled because the car is off the road for good.
Can I claim the CTP refund at the same time?
Same day, different place. Cancel the rego at Service NSW first, then contact your CTP insurer with the cancellation confirmation for their pro-rata refund. People forget the CTP half constantly; on many cars it's the bigger of the two refunds.
