Statutory vs Repairable Write-Off in NSW: The Difference Decides What Your Car Is Worth
Short answer: a repairable write-off can legally be fixed and (with restrictions) return to the road. A statutory write-off can never be registered again in NSW, full stop, and its value is parts and materials. Which one yours is changes the price more than almost anything else about the car.
What a repairable write-off means
When an insurer decides a car costs more to fix than it's worth, but the damage isn't catastrophic, it goes on the Written-Off Vehicle Register as a repairable write-off. The car can be repaired properly, inspected, and potentially re-registered, though NSW rules are strict and getting stricter. The value lives in the gap between the repair cost and the fixed car's market price.

What a statutory write-off means
Statutory write-offs are cars too damaged, too corroded, or too flood-affected to ever return to the road. In NSW they can never be re-registered, banned since 2011, no exceptions worth listening to. Their honest value is their catalogue: undamaged panels, mechanical components, modules, wheels, and recyclable materials.
That value is still real money. A statutory write-off with a healthy engine and clean panels can be worth thousands in parts. What it will never be is a registered car again, so treat anyone promising otherwise as a red flag with wheels.
How to find out which one yours is
If an insurer wrote the car off, they must tell you the classification. You can also check the Written-Off Vehicle Register through a Service NSW vehicle history report, or call 13 22 13. If you're mid-claim, ask the assessor directly: repairable or statutory, and get it in writing.
